During week 5, an elevated risk level was in force at our base in Penela. To be prepared for the most extreme scenarios, we made the exceptional decision to deploy not three, but four emergency responders. A strategic move that, in hindsight, proved to be more than necessary.
Our team was called out for what would prove to be a protracted and physically gruelling operation: a devastating forest fire in Proença-a-Nova (Castelo Branco).
The battle against the inferno lasted no fewer than four consecutive days:
The initial assault: Two of our team members immediately took up positions on the front line and remained on site for almost 24 hours without a break to bring the fire under control.
The relief: The other two team members rushed to provide relief and ultimately remained active for more than 50 hours in the harsh and inhospitable terrain.It turned into an extreme battle of attrition in which our volunteers had to dig deep. Thanks to their tremendous perseverance, professionalism and excellent cooperation with the local fire brigades, everyone emerged from the ordeal safe and unharmed.
