At ERA-BE, we do not limit our efforts to emergency response during wildfires. We consider strengthening local emergency services in the long term to be just as important.

Earlier this month, a consignment was therefore sent to Portugal containing equipment that offers tangible added value to our partners. In addition to emergency response equipment for our own volunteers and a pallet of sports drinks for both our Belgian and Portuguese colleagues, the consignment also included a number of wheelchairs and walkers.

Portugal is facing a shortage of high-quality wheelchairs in various areas. Consequently, in consultation with our local partner in Paredes de Coura, it was decided to make these aids available to the local council and social services.

The wheelchairs are currently undergoing a full inspection and servicing. This involves, amongst other things, lubricating bearings, replacing brake pads and carrying out minor repairs to ensure they can be used safely and reliably.

As the wheelchairs come in various types and sizes, an individual assessment will then be carried out by the local social services. This ensures that each wheelchair can be matched to the person for whom it is most suitable. Where necessary, wheelchairs will also be available via a loan scheme for people who temporarily need an aid but are unable to purchase one themselves.

In addition, three standard transport wheelchairs have been allocated to the local fire brigade in Paredes de Coura. These can be deployed immediately for non-urgent patient transport and other operational tasks.

This project demonstrates what ERA-BE stands for: not only responding when a crisis strikes, but also investing in sustainable cooperation and mutual support with our international partners. By working together with local authorities and emergency services, we ensure that every contribution goes where it makes the greatest difference.
