What began as a dramatic turn of events during a holiday in Belgium ended three years later in a miracle. Kiko the cat went missing without a trace whilst travelling with his owner.

Year after year, hopes of a happy ending remained slim, until he turned up at the Pootjesparadijs animal shelter. When the story reached us, we at ERA-BE didn’t hesitate for a moment. We rolled up our sleeves and immediately offered the shelter our help to finally bring Kiko back home to Braga in Portugal after three long years.

With the necessary travel documents and preparations in place, Kiko boarded the plane bound for Porto. A flight to freedom and home, but the mission was not yet complete on the runway.

Reinforcements were already waiting at Porto airport. In a wonderful example of international cooperation, we joined forces with the Bombeiros Voluntários de Paredes de Coura. With their support, the final leg of the journey was completed: a fitting escort directly from the airport to Braga. The sense of relief and emotion felt by the owner — after three years of uncertainty — was indescribable when Kiko was safely embraced once more.

At ERA-BE, it’s all about decisiveness, international cooperation and never giving up on a mission. Thanks to the Pootjesparadijs animal shelter and the Paredes de Coura fire brigade, this three-year mystery has had the happiest ending imaginable.
